assumption in the 4th. paragraph of his letter that this

reclamation will not be carried out till after that between

Arsenal Street and Kellett Island is incorrect. The East

Praya Reclamation Scheme to which he refers after having

for a long time formed the subject of discussion with the

Naval and Military Authorities with regard to a minor mat-

ter of boundaries has been dropped by its promoters as re-

ported in my despatch No.170 of the 29th. June, 1905. In

OS view of the fact that the land which was to be obtained

from this reclamation, abutting on shallow water, would

have been mainly suitable for dwelling houses and godowns

and that there is little demand at present for additional

accommodation of this nature in the part of the town to the

East of and cut off by the Naval Yard, it is unlikely that

the project will be revived in the near future.

On the other hand between Causeway Bay on

the West and Quarry Bay on the East in which part the recla-

mation, shown in the tracing enclosed in Major-General

Hatton's letter of the 22nd. June, will abut on deep water

in which vessels of considerable draught can lie, there is

already a considerable demand for areas to be reclaimed.

Marine Lot No.285, as stated in the letter to the General

Officer Commanding covered by my despatch of the 16th. June,
